Other Health News: CRP
Researchers have known for quite some time that elevated C-reactive Protein (CRP) levels in the body increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. Recent studies in the New England Journal of Medicine identified elevated CRP levels as a stronger predictor of heart attacks than elevated cholesterol. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is considered a major contributor to increased levels of CRP. Patients with excessive inflammation and active periodontal disease are recommended by Dr. Ortinau to get a blood test to measure CRP levels. Dr. Ortinau is sharing the results with the patient's medical physician which could help in the early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and to help prevent heart attacks.
